Valentine's Day is another holiday where you can spend a lot of "dough" on gifts. Instead of buying expensive flowers, jewelry, or candy, consider making a gift. The gift of food is always a win in our family, and butter cookies are a hit at any holiday. These butter cookies also known as spritz cookies are easy to make with a cookie press. I'm a big fan of the electric or battery operated cookie press, but they also make manual ones. We have had our cookie press in our family since I was little so they are an enduring investment. After you mix up the dough, you add the cookie dough into the device, and as the name implies, you press out each individual cookie. It's a fairly quick process and results in intricate looking and tasty cookies. Of course, if you don't have a cookie press, you can always rolls and cut the cookies with traditional cookie cutters.

Ingredients:
1/2 lb. butter
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 egg
1/8 teaspoon salt
2 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon vanilla
Food coloring
Sugar sprinkles or jimmies, maraschino cherries, chocolate chips, or other decorations

Instructions:
Preheat oven to 400F. Cream butter. Add sugar and incorporate thoroughly. Add egg and vanilla and mix through. Add flour and salt and mix until combined. For colored dough, add food coloring until the desired color is reached.  It is best to use a glass or metal bowl so the coloring doesn't stain the bowl. Use the cookie press to create cookies. Before baking, add sugar sprinkles or other decorations. Bake for 10-12 minutes. Let cool on a cooling rack before serving.  Enjoy with your sweetheart.  Happy Valentine's Day!
